Golden Corral coming to Orange County

If you've caught those Golden Corral commercials on TV, and you've been hankering for the "Seafood Spectacular," or the "Biggest Buffet in the USA," or the "Chocolate Wonderfall," tell your stomach it's on the way.

Golden Corral, which operates 488 all-you-can-eat buffet locations in 43 states, is coming to Orange County. The owner of Party Zone USA on Route 211 said construction is set to start Tuesday to add a Golden Corral onto his space. The owner, David Haziza, said the $3 million renovation will include an upgrade at Party Zone, and the entire project should be done by April. Party Zone is located next-door to the Sonic Drive-In at what used to be called Caldor Plaza. Party Zone will stay open during the renovation.

This would be the first venture into the mid-Hudson region for Golden Corral, famous for offering some 150 varieties of food in a buffet setting. Haziza said diners will be able to munch their way through a dinner for as low as $12 or lunch for $10. The selections, said Lance Davis, who will be the general manager, are "massive." "Middletown is a great fit for Golden Corral," said Bob McDevitt, senior vice president of franchise development. "Our customer base is made up of a diverse group of families and seniors. We love markets with lots of kids, a stable economy and a strong sense of community pride." The nearest Golden Corral restaurants are in Colonie, and Lehigh Valley, Pa. Haziza and his business partner, Eric Ring, who owns the local Sonic, recognized the under-served market and approached Raleigh, N.C.-based Golden Corral.

The company did six months of traffic and demographic studies. The town issued renovation permits in December.

"It's going to be a great fit for that location," said Wallkill Supervisor Dan Depew. "I think it's going to help the continued rebirth of what used to be Caldor Plaza." About 9,000 square feet of the 32,000-square-foot space will be occupied by Golden Corral. Haziza expects to have about 130 people working at the combined Golden Corral-Party Zone.
