Pirtek, the Industrial supply company that supplies and installs Hydraulic hoses, wants to add at least 10 Boston-area locations

An Australian industrial supply company with a location in Avon is looking to add at least 10 franchise locations in Greater Boston in the coming years.

Pirtek USA specializes in repair and supply of hydraulic hoses, which are used in vehicles, machinery and construction equipment. Pirtek USA has 52 locations in the U.S., and the company has 400 locations in 23 countries worldwide.

"There's hydraulics everyhere; you just don't think about it," said Gwyn O'Kane, vice president of franchise development for Pirtek. "When you hop in your car and turn the steering wheel, when you turn on the AC, there's hoses to supply you with nice cold air." Pirtek's Avon office has been open for at least the past seven years, O'Kane said, and the franchise owner there is discussing opening a second location north of Boston by the end of the year. Beyond that, Pirtek wants to add one location per month in large U.S. metropolitan areas.

"We're not like Dunkin' Donuts on every street corner, but we look to put our franchise in about every 500,000-person population base," O'Kane said. For Greater Boston and western Massachusetts, that means at least 10 to 12 new locations in the coming years.

That growth is spurred, in part, by an increased availability of financing, O'Kane said. Pirtek has also established enough of a foothold in the U.S. to begin to expand further, he said.

"We now have enough meat on our bones to be sort of able to really validate and help people coming in," O'Kane said. "Ten years ago, we didn't have a strong network. That comes into play." Pirtek's franchises are typically industrial-based storefronts located near other industrial supply companies, such as Grainger Industrial Supply (NYSE: GWW), with footprints ranging in size from 3,000 square feet to 5,000 square feet. The business-to-business franchise model is attractive to entrepreneurs who like the idea of operating a franchise but dislike the idea of working nights and weekends, as is standard with many retail or fast-food franchises, O'Kane said.
