Hampton Hotels, a worldwide brand of more than 1,700 mid-priced hotels, shot up from No. 21 to No. 4 on this year's annual Franchise 500 list by Entrepreneur Magazine.
Hampton Hotels is a part of McLean-based Hilton Worldwide, which has more than 3,400 hotels in 79 countries and territories. Hampton Hotels' startup costs range between $3.7 million and $13.1 million.
The first Hampton Inn opened in Memphis, Tenn. in 1984, noted the magazine, and in 1995 the brand debuted Hampton Inn & Suites. In 1999, Hampton Inn was bought by Hilton.
The top three franchises on the 2010 list are Subway, McDonald's and 7-Eleven Inc., which was No. 30 in 2009. Dunkin' Donuts landed in the top 10 at No. 7, shooting up from No. 36 last year. Liberty Tax Service, which was No. 3 in 2009, fell to the No. 28 spot in 2010. Another tax preparation service, H & R Block, was new on the list this year at No. 6.
The annual ranking is based on a variety of criteria, including financial strength and stability, growth rate, and size of the system.
