Cke Restaurants Enters Carl's Jr. Franchise Deal

(Tuesday, February 17, 2009) - CKE Restaurants Inc. said Tuesday that it entered a deal to open 72 Carl's Jr. restaurants in Dallas and Houston over the next nine years.

The restaurant operator, which also runs Hardee's restaurants, said it signed a franchise development agreement with Star Foods Investors Group that includes putting 32 restaurants in Dallas and 40 in the Houston market. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Carl's Jr. locations will likely each employ 50 full- and part-time workers, on average.

CKE previously entered a franchise deal with RWJP Star Enterprises to put 121 Carl's Jr. restaurants in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Tyler/Longview and Beaumont, Texas markets over the next 10 years.

CKE has opened five Carl's Jr. restaurants in San Antonio and Austin, Texas, over the past six months and will open another restaurant in San Antonio next week. It anticipates opening several more company-owned restaurants in these markets this year.

There are 18 franchised Carl's Jr. restaurants in Texas to date.

The company had a total of 3,110 franchised, licensed or company-operated restaurants as of Nov. 3. Its shares rose 16 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $7.77 in morning trading.
