Fox's Pizza Den Fundraiser Breaks Record

PUNXSUTAWNEY (Tuesday, October 14, 2008) - The seventh-annual Pizza & Prevention — an annual partnership between area fire departments and Fox's Pizza Den in Punxsutawney — was a major success Saturday.
According to Scott Anthony, the owner of Fox's Pizza Den in Punxsy, the event raised about $20,000.

He said that figure is a 30-percent increase over last year's amount, while Fox's sold a combination of 2,350 Big Daddy Pizzas, plus coupon cards.

As part of the seventh-annual event, firefighters took part in delivering the pizzas and, while making stops at home, checked out the customers' smoke detectors to make sure they were in working order.

For those homes that did not have smoke detectors, firefighters provided the devices, courtesy of Nationwide Insurance-The Kengersky Agency, while Wal-Mart provided batteries.

Anthony created the Pizza & Prevention effort a year after Sept. 11, 2001, as a way to show gratitude toward the community's firefighters, who, in addition to keeping the community safe, spend much of the year fund-raising for necessary equipment and training.

All proceeds — including tips — from the Pizza & Prevention effort go to the Punxsutawney Fire Department.

Pizza & Prevention generally coincides with National Fire Prevention Week, which concluded Saturday.
