China: More Details On Seven-eleven Franchise Expansion
(Friday, May 30, 2008) -
Seven-Eleven announced franchise expansion plans for China will be overlooked by Seven-Eleven Japan, which will be taking over operations in the country from its US subsidiary, 7-Eleven Inc. The US unit currently operates 1,300 7-Eleven stores in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, but has been limited to these two cities.
Seven-Eleven Japan will now handle the expansion initiative, and build a franchise network in Beijing and implant Japanese logistics skills at the existing stores in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. As reported yesterday, operations in Shanghai will be handled by Taiwanese food retailer President Store Chain, which will open 7-Eleven stores under a licensing agreement.
Seven-Eleven Japan had originally imported convenience store know-how from the US unit, and later turned the unit into a wholly owned subsidiary in November 2005. Last month, it established Seven-Eleven China Co. to manage licensing locally. This wholly owned subsidiary will seek local partners, primarily in coastal cities.
