Slip Sliding Away At Nelly
(Wednesday, November 07, 2007) -
RUMOURS are, as usual, racing around the island concerning the closure of the public walkway around the Peppers Resort and Marina at Nelly Bay next to the ferry terminal.
However the truth is much more mundane than most of the conspiracy theories which have surfaced. It appears that there is water seeping onto the path in one spot which is making the path slippery and no fewer than five people have reported slipping over. The council is looking at ways to prevent this happening and deputy mayor Jenny Hill said council staff are in talks with the developer to find a solution. The developers, however, said nothing except 'no comment' which isn't very useful. However, in the meantime I am assured that the council is looking at temporary measures, possibly some non-slip strips, to allow the walkway to reopen while a long-term solution is worked out.
SAD to hear that the Speckled Hen, Ian and Joelle Fleming's antique shop in the old bank building in Flinders Mall, will close next February, with the space to be taken up by offices. The Flemings said they're just taking some long service leave after 40 years in the antiques business and they may open up again in a couple of years. In the meantime, they'll be a sad loss to the mall.
FOR a blessed little while I thought that the cricket dispute would mean an entire summer free of the flannelled fools cluttering up the airwaves. I was thinking happily of a Benaud-free summer with not a silly mid-on to be seen or heard. But it seems I was a bit previous and they're going to work something out. Annoying really.
TROPICAL Friday today and perfect weather for it . . . even the chance of a bit of rain. How good is that? Great to see so many people taking up the Tropical Friday banner again _ now we're going to be one city we should make a big effort.

* THE daughter was coming home from the Peace Corps in Uganda and she surprised her mother who was lighting the Friday night candles and serving the matzoh ball soup. The mother was thrilled, "Sit down, darling. Tell me all about what you've been doing." Her daughter said, "Mum, I got married." "Oy, mazeltov," said the mother. "How could you do that without telling me? What's he like? What does he do? Where is he?" "He's waiting outside while I tell you." "What are you talking about? Bring him in. I want to meet my new son-in-law." In he came and to her consternation the mother saw a black man standing before her, wearing a big grin, a feathered cod piece, an enormous head dress and animal tooth beads. The mother grabbed her daughter and screamed, "Silly girl! I said RICH doctor!"
