Local Businesses Must Prepare For 2007 Daylight Saving Time Changes

(Wednesday, March 07, 2007) - One of the key provisions of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 is to extend Daylight Saving Time (DST) by approximately four weeks. In compliance with this provision, beginning in 2007, DST dates in the United States and Canada will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March) and will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November). "This is a very big issue that could affect millions of small businesses around the world," warns Geeks In A Flash!® founder and CEO, Manny Lloyd. "The potential danger here for small businesses is the big "D" word; downtime - which means loss of money. This is not just for PCs either; this change can affect phones, PDA's, digital clocks and other critical devices. The potential impacts could be a bump in the road to the economy, as critical shipments of medical, financial and political items could be delayed, overnight shipping could be off schedule and time sensitive computer tasks such as backups could fail or become corrupted. Don't take this lightly, it could be as huge as Y2K, but unlike Y2K, this time it is a real problem!" Unless certain updates are applied to your computer, it is possible that the time zone settings for your computer's system clock may be incorrect during this four week period. Geeks In A Flash!® is committed to making this transition as seamless as possible for local businesses. Thus, as an available service, Geeks In A Flash!® will install all updates, as they are released by Microsoft, for Windows products as well as other Microsoft products affected by the new U.S. statute. Microsoft products affected by this include: Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Office Outlook, Microsoft Office Live Meeting, Microsoft Dynamics CRM, Microsoft SQL Server Notification Services and Microsoft Entourage. Geeks In A Flash!® suggests that all users of Microsoft products affected by the time change give extra attention to meetings and appointments scheduled between March 11, 2007 and April 1, 2007 and those between October 28, 2007 and November 4, 2007. "You should view any appointments that fall into these date ranges as suspect until you communicate with all meeting invitees to make sure that the item shows up correctly on everyone's calendar both internally and externally," advises Lloyd. To minimize confusion during the affected date ranges, you should include the time of the meeting in the email request so that invitees can double check the correct meeting time and exercise caution with the appointments and meetings during the extended DST period. When in doubt, verify the correct time with the organizer and consider printing out your weekly calendars during the extended DST period prior to applying the Windows patch containing the updated time zone definitions and running the Outlook Time Zone Update tool so that you can keep track of which meetings were scheduled before and after the update.
