Bad Weather Boosts Sales At Uk Domino's
Rain is slice of luck to pizza maker
(Monday, July 23, 2007) -
The UK's poor summer has proved profitable for Domino's Pizza, as consumers kept out of the rain and munched on takeaways.
The pizza delivery company announced this morning that sales were up by almost 15% year-on-year in the first six months of 2007, with profits up 35% at £8.3m. This was despite Domino's having racked up very strong sales a year ago thanks to the 2006 World Cup.
"The cooler temperatures and increased rainfall which are often very helpful to home delivery food operators, allowed us to comfortably exceed these comparatives," said Domino's.
E-commerce sales were up 42.1% at £13.6m, partly due to a television sponsorship deal with The Simpsons on Sky One.
Analyst Greg Feehely of Altium Securities said Domino's had achieved an "astonishing" performance.
Shares in Domino's were up 8p at 290p. It plans to increase its interim dividend by 46% to 1.9p a share.
The company admitted that it has fallen behind in its store roll-out programme, blaming problems with planning permission. It now expects to open between 40 and 45 stores this year, down from an earlier target of 50.
