Aah . . . There's The Rub, A New Massage Franchise

(Friday, July 06, 2007) - Charlie Marsh had been a client at Massage Envy in Arizona for four years when she came to visit Indiana, her home state, and to her dismay, didn't find any.

Her solution? Move back home and open a clinic in Carmel.
Marsh, 40, Indianapolis, knew she would enjoy running a Massage Envy franchise, a members-only massage clinic, because she loved it as a client.
It was a big change for Marsh, who became a business owner and regional developer for Massage Envy after working in real estate for 10 years. She opened the first Massage Envy in Indiana more than two months ago at the Village Park Shopping Center, at North Meridian and 151st streets in Carmel.
A second location will open in a few months in the west Carmel/Zionsville area at 4000 W. 106th St.
"The Phoenix real estate market was very good to me," Marsh said. "I did very well. I took my winnings and looked to do something different. Ten years is a long time doing the same thing. I wanted to do something I really enjoyed doing.
"This is truly why I'm so excited about it," she said. "It's not only something that I love, but I've loved it from the other side. And I'm bringing this back to my home state, which was kind of cool. I really loved the idea that I could bring this back home."
Massage Envy has about 270 clinics throughout the country with several hundred more in the works, Marsh said.
Members of Massage Envy pay a monthly fee of $49, which includes one massage. From then on, each one-hour massage -- including Swedish, deep tissue, reflexology, and others -- costs $39. As members, people can go to any Massage Envy location.
"Because you are a member, you get better rates and better pricing," Marsh said. "You can get them every other day, or once or twice a week because for $39, you can do that."
That's one of the reasons Eileen McCain is a Massage Envy member. McCain, who used to live in Phoenix, joined one three years ago. Her mother is also a member there, and her sister belongs to one in Denver.
McCain, 39, moved to Fishers in April 2006 and was disappointed to see there were no Massage Envy clinics.
"When I found out they were opening one here (in Carmel), I was thrilled," she said. "I had neck surgery in 2001 and require a massage often to function. They have been a lifesaver for me. I go one to two times a week. I was going somewhere else before they opened, and it was significantly more expensive. I was spending $100 a week. With them I can get two for that."
McCain moved to Tennessee last week and is once again going to have to do without a Massage Envy, which she describes as affordable, convenient and professional.
"I have thought of opening one myself," she said. "You can't go wrong with that because in this day and age people are taking better care of themselves. It's great. You need to take care of yourself."
