Grayslake firm offers continuing education courses on the high seas

(Wednesday, May 30, 2007) - You can learn while cruising and get university credits as well.

David Whelchel of Grayslake, owner of a Cruise Planners franchise, said his parent company is offering continuing education for physicians, dentists, nurses and attorneys taking ocean cruises.

The cruises will be on Royal Caribbean International and Crystal Cruises, with destinations including Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, Canada, Europe, Asia, Mexico and the Mediterranean,

"We're excited about this exclusive partnership with International Conferences and look forward to making it possible for medical and legal professionals to earn continuing education credits while traveling with their families," said Whelchel.

He said he took a cruise with his wife, Karen, a manager at Abbott Laboratories, and enjoyed it tremendously. He said when he decided to own his own business he chose Cruise Planners, a franchisor based in Coral Springs, Fla., because of the "great opportunities" offered by it.

"I thought it would be fun and exciting to sell cruises," said Whelchel who formerly worked in corporate benefits and human resources at an area company.

Among courses offered will be legal medicine, infectious diseases, emergency medicine, cardiology, pediatric medicine, endorinology and urology.

"What a perfect way to mix business with pleasure, sailing with family and colleagues, and at the same time having access to excellent academic programs, nationally recognized faculty, and cultural tours," he said.

There will be as many as 21 or more voyages to be offered, beginning June 5. Participants can earn up to 18 or 24 hours of credit from accrediting agencies by completing the seminars.

Cost of the cruises range from $1,500 to $4,500, plus $500 or more for seminar, depending on credit hours.
