Pizza Pizza Invites Customers To "Pitch-in" In Support Of Earth Day Activities
(Wednesday, April 19, 2006) -
Pizza Pizza is pitching in on a number of fronts in support of Earth Month, Earth Day and PITCH-IN CANADA Week activities throughout Ontario and Quebec. For the second year in a row, Pizza Pizza is supporting PITCH-IN CANADA's National Cell Phone Collection Program in an effort to contribute to a cleaner environment.
Pizza Pizza is accepting old cell phones at all traditional restaurants across Ontario and Quebec. Customers who drop off a cell phone will receive a free slice of pizza as a thank you for their environmentally-conscious gesture. The cell phone recycling program will take place in Pizza Pizza restaurants throughout the month of April, leading up to PITCH-IN CANADA Week, April 24-30, and Earth Day, on April 22.
"Cell phones contain many toxins, are very hazardous to our environment and should not end up in landfills. We are very enthused about this opportunity to support PITCH-IN CANADA's many waste reduction programs and contribute to the recycling effort through our network of restaurants across Ontario and Quebec,"said Pat Finelli, Vice President of Marketing at Pizza Pizza.
"We are excited to again partner with Pizza Pizza to help get out the message that toxic old cell phones should not be thrown in local dumps when they can be refurbished or re-used,"says Misha van Veen, National Program Manager for PITCH-IN CANADA. She adds phones and batteries that cannot be re-used are recycled to recover metals and plastics.
All cell phone handsets, regardless of age or condition, will be accepted and customers are urged to ensure the phones are deactivated before dropping them off at Pizza Pizza.
PITCH-IN CANADA's year-round National Cell Phone Collection Program involves more than 600 groups in Canada who have collected tens of thousands of used cell phones. The national non-profit and charitable organization also organises and promotes a number of other highly successful waste reduction, recycling and environmental action programs, including PITCH-IN CANADA Week and the 20-Minute Makeover, taking place in April and involving more than two million Canadians in community and environmental improvement programs.
On Friday, April 21, Pizza Pizza will play an active role in the annual 20-Minute Makeover, a community clean-up project promoted by PITCH-IN CANADA. Pizza Pizza restaurants in participating communities across Ontario will serve as a central point for the distribution of free bags and gloves.
Pizza Pizza is also participating throughout the GTA in an Earth-Month related project distributing yard waste paper bags to encourage residents of communities across the province to clean-up their yards. The bags will be distributed free at 350 Pizza Pizza locations in Ontario to customers purchasing any large, three-topping pizza.
