Ontario And Quebec Residents Trade Cells For Slices At Local Pizza Pizza Restaurants Cell Phone Collection Helps Raise Funds For Canadian Association Of Food Banks

(Monday, April 09, 2007) - Wondering what to do with your old cell phone as you go through the spring-cleaning ritual? Drop it off at your nearest Pizza Pizza restaurant during the month of April and you'll not only receive a free slice of pizza, you'll be diverting the phones from landfills and helping the Canadian Association of Food Banks (CAFB) and its members in its efforts to alleviate hunger.

A staunch supporter of environmental causes, Pizza Pizza is partnering with the Association's "Phones - for - Food" program whereby recycled phones are sorted and sold to the remanufacturing industry, which in turn sells the refurbished products to consumers, raising funds for local food banks in the process.

Throughout April, which is designated as Earth Month, Pizza Pizza is accepting old cell phones at all traditional restaurants across Ontario and Quebec. Customers who drop off a cell phone will receive a free slice of pizza as a thank you for their environmentally conscious gesture.

"It's a win-win situation for everyone," said Pat Finelli, Chief Marketing Officer of Pizza Pizza. "Recycling the cell phones contributes to a cleaner environment because it keeps them out of landfills, where the hazardous toxins they contain could leak into the ground. The fact these discarded cell phones can be re-used and generate much-needed funds for food banks helps to improve the well-being of a lot of people in our communities. Pizza Pizza has an avid interest in both of these causes, and that's why our partnership with the Canadian Association of Food Banks is such a natural fit."

All cell phone handsets, regardless of age or condition, will be accepted and customers are urged to ensure the phones are deactivated before dropping them off at Pizza Pizza. The CAFB will receive the cell phones from Pizza Pizza, whereupon the phones will be sorted and sold for refurbishing. Each phone with value is worth between $2-$5, allowing food banks to spend the funds that are raised on its greatest necessities.

"Our goal is to constantly work toward finding long-term solutions to eradicate hunger, which continues to increase at an alarming rate across the country, and also to create public awareness of the problem," said Charles Seiden, Executive Director of the CAFB. "We can only do so through a collective effort, and the support of an actively involved partner such as Pizza Pizza, and the customers who take the time to drop off their cell phones is both welcome and appreciated as we focus on a common goal."

Pizza Pizza will also be active on other fronts during Earth Month. On Friday, April 20, it will take part in the annual 20-Minute Makeover, a community clean-up project. Pizza Pizza restaurants in Ajax, Markham, Mississauga, Oakville, Pickering, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Milton communities across Ontario will serve as a central point for the distribution of free bags and gloves.
