Popeye's Chicken Franchise Coming To Waterloo

WATERLOO, IA (Friday, April 06, 2007) - After experiencing success in Des Moines, Popeye's Chicken is coming to Waterloo.

A Popeye's is being constructed at 4015 Lowe's Blvd. in the Martin Plaza area of Waterloo. It is expected to open in early July.

Comes Enterprises of Des Moines is the principal group developing the project. According to Ed McGowen, director of operations for Comes, the opening date might change depending on the weather.

"We'd love to get it open by June 1, but that's probably not going to happen," said McGowen.

The construction is being done by Michael Huff Construction of Cedar Falls. President Michael Huff also speculated that the construction would take "about three months." Huff has experience with the Martin Plaza area, having worked on the Tower Plaza and the Culver's, among others.

Comes primarily operates Pizza Huts in northwest Iowa and South Dakota, but after the success of the two Popeye's locations in the Des Moines area, the company decided to venture into the chicken business. McGowen said that Comes acquired the Popeye's franchise for eastern Iowa, but said that there were no timelines on opening other locations.

Managers for the Waterloo location are currently training at the two Des Moines locations in preparation for the Waterloo opening.

"It is a great community in Waterloo," said McGowen, who was once a Waterloo resident. "We are looking forward to doing business there."
