First Hardee's Franchise Being Torn Down

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C (Monday, March 12, 2007) - Crews have started tearing down the first Hardee's franchise store in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to make way for a city park.

Hardee's Number One -- as it was called by the company -- opened in 1961 and offered 15-cent burgers and 10-cent soft drinks.

Officials considered turning the building into a restaurant museum, but it had been vacant for more than ten years and was rundown. The site will become a veterans' memorial and park named for Jack Laughery, a former company chairman who died last year.

The first Hardee's restaurant was opened by Wilbur Hardee in Greenville, North Carolina, in 1960, but the Rocky Mount store was the first in the franchise.
