Deadly Household And Wild Plants

An article that details the dangers that some common household plants can pose to your precious companions...

(Monday, March 07, 2005) - There is little question that plants are beautiful and serve to effectively enhance the aesthetics of a given surrounding. Many people, however, are not aware that a number of these same plants are also toxic to companion animals. If an individual is both a plant and animal lover, it may be difficult to choose one over the other, but it's better than having to watch an animal suffer from poisoning. Here are some common household plants to watch out for:

Caladium (a.k.a. Angel Wings)
Spider plant
Dieffenbachia
Dragon tree
English holly
Daffodil
Snowhead
Foxglove
Poinsettia
Airplant
Hyacinth
To follow regular household plants, here is a list of toxic naturally occurring plants to watch out for:

Foxglove
Oak
Red mapple
Thorn apple
Water hemlock
Skunk cabbage
Milkweeds
Bluebonnet
Symptoms of poisoning include excessive salivation, intense pain, diarrhea, vomiting, gastro-intestinal disorders and even death. These lists are not intended to create a panic situation nor encourage discarding of plants; they are simply stated to increase awareness of possible toxicities.
