1-800-got-junk? Names Winner Of Weirdest Junk Contest
(Thursday, July 20, 2006) -
What do you get when you combine a hydroponic lighting system, a unicorn shaped coffee table and an old mortician's closet? A lot of weird junk! These are also the sorts of items that inspired the Weird Junk Contest sponsored by 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. In the past the company has removed everything from the weird to the unusual. A first edition Playboy, diffused bomb, truck full of garden gnomes and mechanical bull are just a few of the items that rank on the company's Weird Junk List. The challenge for this year's contest was to hear from 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Truck Teams across North America, Australia and the UK and get more information on their weird junk experiences. An overwhelming number of submissions were received and Honorable Mention went to finalists from Seattle, WA and Sydney, Australia for their contributions of a truck full of mannequin parts and a collection of denture molds. The winning submission came from Canadian Truck Team Members Nate Kuehl and Rob Judge of Kitchener, Ontario. Their photo entry was entitled "Can You Hear Me Now" and featured the team holding two, six foot tall, giant pink walkie-talkies that were fully functioning radio systems. "We picked up the walkie-talkies at the Waterloo Regional Children's Museum," explained Nate Kuehl. "They were a part of a discontinued display that was being taken down" "We thought they were pretty hilarious and we couldn't believe they actually worked." According to the team once the items were back at the office, a neighbor asked if he could use them in his business. The giant pink walkie-talkies are now used as a paging system to contact staff from the front desk to the back of the store. "I guess it really goes to show that one person's trash is another person's treasure," added Nate Kuehl. Kuehl and Judge will be splitting their cash prize and keeping their eye out for more weird junk in the future.
