Boyertown Rita's To Show Support For Childhood Cancer Victims With Head Shaving Event

BOYERTOWN, PA (Wednesday, July 12, 2006) - An estimated 12,500 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer annually. Many must undergo chemotherapy and endure the resulting loss of their hair.

On Sunday, July 23 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Rita's Ices, Cones, Shakes and Other Cool Stuff at 309 East Philadelphia Avenue in Boyertown a number of volunteers will have their heads shaved to show support for children who lose their hair because of cancer.

Liz and Jay Scott, the parents of the late Alexandra "Alex" Scott who started Alex's Lemonade Stand will attend. Michelle Cimino of Michelle' Hair Impressions will do the shaving honors.

Throughout the day there will be an Alex's Lemonade Stand collecting donations for the charity that funds research into childhood cancer.

"What Alex Scott accomplished in her short life was amazing," said Parrish Stouffer, co-owner of the Boyertown Rita's. "On Sunday we want to show solidarity with those kids who are battling cancer."

Recently Alex's Lemonade Stand was recently named the official corporate charity of Rita's. In memory of Alex Scott, the company permanently renamed its lemon ice "Alex's Lemonade."

During July more than 370 Rita's locations nationwide are selling special paper lemons for $1. All of the proceeds will be donated to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. The paper lemons will have the purchaser's name on it and will be posted on their local Rita's Wall of Hope.

The goal of $100,000 has already been surpassed, with the month not even half over. In addition, Rita's Water Ice Franchise Company LLC, the brand's parent, company pledged $15,000 and is offering advertising, marketing and public relations support.

Alex's Lemonade Stand was founded by a young cancer patient, Alexandra "Alex" Scott. For four years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands have been held across the country by children, schools, businesses and organizations, all to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. As of today, her national campaign has raised over 6 million dollars for pediatric cancer research. Alex died peacefully in August, 2004. Her family is committed to continuing with her legacy through her foundation, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation until a cure for all childhood cancers is found.
