Gold's Gym Rockville Encourages Residents To send Comforts Of Home' To U.s. Troops Overseas
ROCKVILLE, MD (Thursday, October 12, 2006) -
Throughout the month of October, Gold's Gym Rockville is sponsoring a military donation campaign to rally residents to collect much needed care package supplies for U.S. soldiers deployed overseas.
Now, through the end of October, Rockville residents are encouraged to visit Gold's Gym Rockville to donate items including power bars, beef jerky, razors, toothbrushes, magazines, hand sanitizer and many more much needed items for U.S. troops. Anyone that donates items through the Gold's Gym Rockville drop off boxes will receive 15% off all purchases in the Gold's Gym Rockville Pro Shop as well as a free one-week pass to work out at the Gold's Gym Rockville facility, located at 5520-A Randolph Road.
The idea to partner with Gold's Gym to start a military donation campaign at the Rockville facility was introduced by Gold's Gym member, Susan Warren. She began sending care packages to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002 when her nephew, Alex McBride, enlisted in the Marine Corps. Warren purchased several non-perishable food items, batteries, magazines, books, etc. and shipped the packages to McBride, requesting that he pass them out to the young men in his platoon. McBride and his fellow troops expressed their heartfelt appreciation through a constant flow of letters, e-mails and phone calls.
"My life has changed 100 degrees since I began sending care packages to our troops overseas. I've made several new friends, many of which feel like family members," said Warren. With support from community members and friends, Warren has raised more than $60,000 to purchase items for the care packages, and ships between five and ten boxes overseas per week.
Warren shared her inspirational story with her fellow fitness partners and asked if they'd be interested in starting a collection point at the Gold's Gym Rockville location. The overwhelming interest from staff and gym members encouraged Warren to work with Gold's Gym Rockville to establish a drop-box for members and other residents to donate essential non-perishable items for U.S. soldiers deployed overseas.
