Oh Thanksgiving For 7-eleven!

On Thanksgiving, Millions Of Americans Say, ‘Oh, Thank Heaven!'

(Monday, November 20, 2006) - The Thanksgiving holidays are hectic especially when preparing what is ostensibly the biggest meal of the year. For experienced as well as first-time cooks, a teen who has a sudden Slurpee® drink craving, the guys waiting on the big meal … and the big game and, of course, those who just want to get out of the house and away from the relatives for awhile, 7-Eleven® stores offer something for everyone.
"7-Eleven serves as an emergency stop year-round for customers in a hurry, and during the holidays, this is especially so," said Doug Shockley, grocery category manager at 7-Eleven. "We know what we need to have in stock Thanksgiving, and some items might surprise you."

For many customers, nothing must wash down turkey and dressing better than a cold, imported beer. While soft drink purchases double and wine sales triple at 7-Eleven stores during Thanksgiving week, purchases of super premium, imported beers more than quadruple.

Perhaps more surprisingly, grilled Big Bite® hot dogs are a top-seller on Thanksgiving day. "I don't know if people get hungry, waiting for dinner to be prepared or have had enough turkey by the evening, but we have a pretty steady stream of customers buying hot dogs throughout the day," said Kent Jimenez, 7-Eleven grill category manager.

Holiday needs aren't limited to food and beverages though. Aluminum foil, plastic plates and cups, toilet paper and diapers sales leap, as well. Firewood, disposable cameras and film also show a dramatic sales boost. 7-Eleven even carries a variety of fresh-cut flowers to set a festive table.

For Thanksgiving week, the top 10-selling grocery items at 7-Eleven are:

1. Cool Whip

2. Nestle Tollhouse Morsels

3. Kraft Stovetop Stuffing

4. Kraft Mini-Marshmallows

5. Ocean Spray Cranberries

6. Dixie Crystals Brown Sugar

7. Heinz Homestyle Gravy

8. Del Monte Green Beans

9. Del Monte Corn

10. Carnation Evaporated Milk

Milk sales, another year-round big-seller at 7-Eleven, jump exponentially along with other dairy products. The biggest movers this week, however, are butter and margarine, whipped and sour cream. Bacon, eggs, vanilla ice cream and bagged ice also show triple-digit increases.

"What might surprise some people is just how fresh our dairy products are," said Kurt Schumacher, dairy category manager. "With daily delivery, 7-Eleven store managers try to order just what they can sell in one or two days. These daily orders are transmitted to the dairies, which deliver the product to distribution centers that serve our stores around the country. The milk is then loaded into refrigerated trucks for delivery the very day after the order was placed. Most grocery stores get shipments only once or twice a week. We can stock fresh milk daily. I encourage people to check our milk's expiration date and compare."

"We're here with the forgotten ingredients for a favorite family recipe, basics like milk and bread, a cup of hot coffee and a newspaper, or to gas up the car before heading to grandma's," Shockley said. "Sometimes I think 7-Eleven just provides an excuse to get out of the house and away from all the holiday madness. Whatever the reason, we're here, open and ready to meet customers' needs.
