It may be hot outside but inside the newest Tropical Smoothie Café, customers are taking in the Hawaiian Breeze and Blue Lagoon.
Tropical Smoothie Café, at 7660 W. Cheyenne Ave., held its grand opening on July 9.
"This is healthy fast food," said Dina Mitchell, owner and area developer. "And everything is made to order."
The low-fat Hawaiian Breeze smoothie contains pineapple, orange and non-fat yogurt, and Blue Lagoon has blueberries, strawberries and banana.
The store uses fresh fruit whenever it is consistently available and all employees are trained to know when fresh fruit is at the perfect ripeness. Mitchell said bananas that are past their peak can overpower all other flavors.
Power Smoothies, which contain fat metabolizer, soy or wheat protein, energizer or Vitamin C IMMUNE-Complex, also are available, and all smoothies can be made with wheatgrass.
Mitchell said an ounce of wheatgrass is equivalent to eating five pounds of raw organic vegetables.
"Wheatgrass will make your skin and hair softer," Mitchell said. "You'll have more energy than you ever had with coffee. It regulates blood sugar. It's an all-organic, natural product."
The majority of the drinks are not made with any dairy products. Unlike some smoothies, the cafe's are not sweetened with yogurt or sherbert. Most drinks are made with nothing more than real fruit, ice and either raw sugar or Splenda, a no calorie sweetener.
A full range of food items also are on the menu, including lunch and breakfast wraps, soups and salads. Mitchell said the King Caesar wrap is "a no fail, whether you like Caesar salad or not."
Dessert Smoothies include Peanut Butter Cup -- peanut butter, banana and Ghirardelli's chocolate -- and Mocha Madness -- Ghirardelli's chocolate, coffee, cappuccino and non-fat yogurt.
The store, which offers free wi-fi, uses the newest Tropical Smoothie design, which integrates bamboo and bright colors.
"Coming from L.A. I didn't really find places to hang out unless they were a bar," said Mitchell. "This is a cool atmosphere."
There are currently nine Tropical Smoothie Cafés in Las Vegas and 23 under development. Three of the new locations will feature drive-through windows. Smoothies start at $3.99 and food items range from 99 cents to $6.49. Tropical Smoothie Café is open from 6:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
