Short Order: Tin Star's House Favorites Are The Best Bets

SAN ANTONIO (Friday, February 18, 2005) - There's a new Tin Star in town, and it's promising plenty of "sizzle, smoke & salsa."

With starters, salads, quesadillas, soups, sides, soft tacos, grilled entrees, fajitas, all-American favorites and some healthful items to boot, the menu offers something to please just about everyone. On weekends, there's even a brunch menu, though I'd pass on those options in favor of the lunch and dinner items.

In our visits to Tin Star, we learned something pretty quickly. The restaurant puts red stars by menu items it calls "house favorites." Without question, the starred items were our favorites as well.

Highest on our list were the Cheeseburger Tacos. Sure, it sounds a little strange, but the combination of beef patties, Cheddar cheese, mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes, sliced onion and dill pickle relish tasted great wrapped up in one of Tin Star's good flour tortillas.

Our other favorite was the Chipotle Chicken Scaloppini. This was about as rich and fattening a you can get, but the chicken breast that was sauteed with mushrooms and served with a lively lemon butter chipotle suace was good enough to bring us back.

The Grilled Chicken Platter was low in calories and fat and had one of the tastiest, juiciest grilled chicken breasts I've found in the city. Nicely grilled fresh vegetables and mashed black beans, which tasted slightly bitter on both our visits, accompanied.

Fire Grilled Beef Tenderloin featured several tough slices of tenderloin served with a side of Demi-Glaze Potatoes. A gooey mass of cheese and brown sauce made the potatoes so unattractive and soggy that we left most of them on the plate. Sauteed pico spinach, on the other hand, tasted fresh and bright.

Tin Star offers an assortment of gourmet soft tacos, including a good seafood taco topped with cole slaw, chipotle sauce and pico de gallo. they come in your choice of flour tortillas or lettuce cups for those watching their carbs.

Boneless Buffalo Wings won't have us leaving behind regular wings any time soon, but the crispy strips of boneless chicken were good, especially when paired with the hand-breaded onion shreds that put most onion rings to shame. In fact, we put the salty, crunchy strings right up there with the best in the city.

There are planty of dessert choices, but the gooiest on has to be the Chocolate Eruption Cake. A topping of Hershey's syrup added more fake chocolate taste to an unsatisfying conglomeration of flavors. We looked longingly at the Blue Bell milkshakes and realized once again, that simple is usually better.
