Celebrate July 4th With A&w In Downtown St. Petersburg And Support Middleton High School Basketball

ST. PETERSBURG (Monday, June 26, 2006) - Long John Silver's and A&W Restaurants will be sponsors of the Downtown St. Petersburg July 4th celebration, and will raise money for Tampa's Middleton High School basketball team by selling A&W Root Beer Floats at the event.

Representatives from LJS/A&W will be on hand to serve frosty Root Beer Floats to Independence Day celebrants. The floats will sell for $4 apiece and will include a free souvenir mug. Proceeds from the sale of A&W floats will be used to purchase athletic clothing and basketball shoes for the 26 members of the Middleton High School varsity and junior varsity teams.

"We have a passion for giving back to the community, so it's exciting to partner with 93.3 FM WFLZ and 95.7 The Beat to participate in St. Petersburg's Fourth of July celebration and raise money for such a great cause," said Susan Goldner, Long John Silver's/A&W Field Marketing Leader. "We'll be raising money by selling root beer floats and the radio stations will be hosting a Tasco Inflatables area for the kids. A ticket to the inflatables area will be only $1, and the proceeds from both the root beer float sales and ticket sales will support the Middleton Tigers basketball team."

Goldner added that Long John Silver's, A&W Restaurants and the radio stations hope to raise at least $2,000 for the team during the event, which begins at 1 p.m.

Derek Smith, Head Coach of the Middleton High School basketball team, said that providing athletic clothing and game shoes for players at the inner-city school has a positive effect on the players' self-esteem. The school provides game uniforms, but basketball shoes and other athletic clothing is usually the responsibility of the players.

"This is a really big deal for the players, some of whom do not have money to purchase game shoes or athletic clothing," Smith said. "Providing each player with shoes, sweats, practice shorts and polo shirts -- when they otherwise might not be able to afford to buy them -- goes a long way. We attend a lot of events as a team and it helps the players' self-esteem when they look sharp and uniform, dressed in the school colors."

Besides enjoying A&W's famous Root Beer Floats and helping out a good cause, those in attendance at the event can also get their hands on some coupons for some very special Long John Silver's and A&W offers. While restaurant employees make floats, Middleton players will be passing out valuable coupons for Long John Silver's and A&W products.

"The coupon offers include a free Parmesan Fish Bites Snack Box with any Long John Silver's purchase, as well as Buy One, Get One Free offers for great A&W Sweets & Treats including Polar Swirls, Milkshakes, Sundaes, Root Beer Freezes and A&W's famous Root Beer Floats," Goldner said. "The Fourth of July celebration is the only place to get these coupons, so we hope to see a big crowd of people taking advantage of the offer."
