Howard Johnson International Extends Commitment To The Association Of African American Museums
MUSEUMSBrand Continues To Promote African American Legacy
(Saturday, January 01, 2000) -
Howard Johnson International Inc., announced today a two-year extension to the brand's commitment to the Association of African American Museums (AAAM). As a result, the brand will continue to sponsor the African American Heritage Directory with the Group Leaders of America (GLAMER).
''We formed a strong alliance with the Association of African American Museums through the publication of the African American Heritage Directory,'' said Mary Mahoney, president and CEO of Howard Johnson International, Inc. ''It was created to promote cultural understanding between all people and we are proud to continue our involvement with this project. The directory is an important tool for raising awareness of the diversity of institutions and cultural centers that exist.''
The directory, which lists African American museums, libraries, art galleries, historical sites and cultural centers, will be updated and prominently displayed in all Howard Johnson properties across the United States and Canada. The directory will also be available at all AAAM locations and will be distributed at GLAMER Travel Marketplaces.
Since the directory's unveiling in February 1999, awareness of Howard Johnson brand among African American adults has significantly increased. The promotion was designed to increase awareness of the AAAM though 20,000 GLAMER group leaders, who provide tours for more than 6.4 million senior citizens each year.
''On behalf of the AAAM, I want to thank Howard Johnson for the opportunity to market 240 wonderful museums and sites to the domestic tourism industry,'' said Charlie Presley, president of GLAMER. ''The directory has benefited hundreds of thousands of travelers and has created a great awareness of AAAM's diversity and many fine cultural sites. The program has been the association's most successful marketing tool.''
The AAAM has nearly 240 institutional members dedicated to the education, preservation and enhancement of knowledge about the history and culture of African Americans. These organizations are located in many cities where visitors can learn about the contributions of specific people and events significant to African American history.
