First Subway" Employee Transforms Amherst Restaurant Into a Showplace

AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS (Friday, July 28, 2006) - Dick Pilchen, the first employee of the
SUBWAY® restaurant chain and the man who designed the company's first logo, has brought his
more than 40 years' of entrepreneurial experience to the Amherst area as the new franchisee of the
SUBWAY® restaurant on Main Street.
Dick, who has been involved in the SUBWAY® restaurant system since day-one – back
in 1965 - and his business partner Daniel Marcantonio, have transformed the #4 Main Street corner
restaurant into a state-of-the-art facility, via a mega-makeover with the chain's fresh Tuscany décor.
Dan, who is a recent Michigan college graduate, said,
"The possibilities seemed limitless."
Before interior remodeling began, an "Under New
Ownership" sign went up and customers were asked to suggest
areas for potential improvement.
From mid-March into April, the Amherst restaurant
underwent a three-week makeover back to front, inside and out, adding additional seating and food
preparation areas. To speed customer service during busy lunch and dinner hours, Dick and Dan
installed a touch-screen kiosk ordering station, which has proved very popular with patrons.
Dick and Dan decided on purchasing the SUBWAY® Amherst location after they visited the
charming town in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, located about 85 miles west of
Boston. Along with the campus of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, two private schools -
Amherst College and Hampshire College - are conveniently located nearby.
Dick was a Connecticut-based SUBWAY® franchisee some 25 years ago – the owner of three
locations in Meriden and Branford CT - while also a part of SUBWAY's initial management team. He
currently serves as a Profit Building Consultant with the SUBWAY® chain's corporate Local Marketing
department.
