Culver's Salutes Farmers During June Dairy Month
(Thursday, June 01, 2006) -
As communities across America celebrate the important role dairy farmers play in our communities during June Dairy Month, Culver's® salutes the farmers and bovine beauties who make it all possible right here in the heart of America's Dairyland. In Wisconsin, Culver's is one of many local businesses sponsoring the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB) CowParade®, the world's largest public art event featuring 101 cows, 50 to be auctioned for charity this November. The summer-long event kicks off June 3 in the state capitol, and a traveling herd sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) in partnership with the Wisconsin 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) Foundations will visit locations throughout the state. Culver's has commissioned a "herd" of three cows named Ici-cow, Sundaes Best and Flavor of the Day, which will be seen in the Madison area. Ici-cow will be in the new Overture Center for the Arts. After the summer tour, the cows will be auctioned off for various charities. Sixty percent of all funds will go to the new American Family® Children's Hospital at University of Wisconsin (UW) Hospital and Clinics in Madison. The remaining 40 percent of Sundaes Best and Flavor of the Day will be donated to the 4-H and FFA Foundations. Ici-cow will generate funds for Culver's VIP Scholarship program. Culver's also encourages community support of up-and-coming dairy farmers through the annual Ride to Farm event in mid-June and other activities benefiting the Wisconsin School for Beginning Dairy Farmers, a program of the UW-Madison Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems and the Farm and Industry Short Course. - more - Page 2 – Culver's Salutes June Dairy Month Local dairy products are used in many of the restaurant chain's guest favorites – especially Culver's creamy frozen custard – and the cheese, milk and other products making up Culver's varied menu all use real dairy and the freshest, quality ingredients. In fact, Culver's estimates it keeps nearly 70 dairy farms – and 6,547 cows – employed year-round due to the 121,580,668 pounds of milk used to make the nearly 150,000,000 scoops of frozen custard guests enjoy annually. Culver's guests have also been exposed to Wisconsin's delicacy, cheese curds, and will consume 1.7 million pounds in a year's time in 15 states, while drinking about 1.1 million half pints of milk. By working with Foremost Farms, both chocolate and white milk consumption have skyrocketed with the change from cartons to plastic containers. Culver's restaurants are independently owned and operated in nearly 330 locations. With the opening of Culver's first locations in Arizona and Kentucky, guests will be able to enjoy their favorites in 17 states across the nation. The owner/operator concept has been a cornerstone of growth for Culver's since the first location opened in Sauk City, Wis., on July 18, 1984. Culver's invests deeply in partnerships and programs, including its VIP scholarship program, the annual "Day of Warmth" and countless other franchise-driven local efforts. Culver's is the recipient of numerous industry and community awards, including the 2006 IFMA Silver Plate Award, 2005 Nation's Restaurant News' Golden Chain Award and Wisconsin's Ernst & Young® Entrepreneur of the Year® Award.
