Organizing Ideas To Simplify Your Move

(Tuesday, June 06, 2006) - While relocating your household probably doesn't rank high in the top ten list of favorite things to do, it's a great opportunity to make a fresh start. Even if your previous home was less than organized, with a bit of advanced planning, you can make your new house truly a home to enjoy. The organizing experts at California Closets offer a few tips.

Organize at both ends of the move. Think about where in your new home your possessions will go before you even begin packing. Take stock of the existing storage spaces in the new home you have chosen. If you can't easily see your possessions fitting into the space, this is the best time to consider working with a storage provider to create custom solutions to fit your needs. With new homes, often a plan can be executed by working from the model, wrapping costs directly into mortgage financing prior to escrow close. This also allows your new home to be completely ready for your move-in, and paves the way for an easy transition.

When you return to pack up the home you are leaving, it's time to be brutally honest about what you really must keep, and what can be left behind. Remember, if you haven't used an item in a year or more, if you move it, you will only to have to find storage for it in your new home. However, if you donate it to charity, you get a small tax break — and give someone else a chance to get some real use out of the item.

Pack your remaining items room by room, keeping like items together. Label and number boxes for each room, and keep a master list with contents noted by box number. Boxes holding items you will need immediately should be marked for "Priority Action," and those containing archival items marked for "Long-term Storage" to streamline unpacking.

Plan for unpacking. Upon arrival each box should be delivered to the appropriate room, with boxes marked "Priority Action" easily accessible. Place your possessions within the appropriate storage areas, keeping in mind how you use and access each item. As you unpack, place frequently used items in sight and easy reach. Items used less frequently should be placed in drawers, or higher shelves, and endeavor to keep everything off the floor.

Think vertical. If you're faced with downsizing, and are not able to incorporate all your old furniture into your new home, don't despair. A good storage system can eliminate the need for a dresser, entertainment center, or armoire, using vertical wall space to its best advantage, freeing up valuable floor space while controlling clutter.
