Women In Business

Smart Women Smart Money

(Friday, August 05, 2005) - Tell us about the moment you discovered you had a knack for business. If we ever had any doubts, they disappeared the moment we became "Girlfriends." Great business is market-driven, or in our case, Girlfriend-driven. Our target audience struggles every day with serving a home-cooked dinner to her family. We identified the problem and committed ourselves to a new business concept that offers an innovative solution. How do you stay motivated? Our customers are all the motivation we need. When someone leaves one of our stores with 12 dinners that they made themselves, they leave with more than just delicious food, they leave with a weight lifted. People are so busy these days, but everyone still wants it all: great house, great hair, great job, great dinner on the table, too. We make a positive difference in our customer's lives, and there's nothing more motivating or rewarding. Who inspires you? Our Girlfriends, of course. We're true believers in Girlfriend- Power. After all, My Girlfriend's Kitchen was started by two real-life girlfriends in one of their kitchens. Now My Girlfriend's Kitchen is opening stores across the country. When you believe in yourselves, everything's possible. What is the key to a successful business? Stay focused. Stay positive. Keep it simple. And don't go overboard on the garlic. What do you do to unwind? Home, family, and friends—no matter how hard-boiled and hardworking the Girlfriend, home is where our heart is. Brea Mefford and Darlene Madison (South Jordan store coowners); Jennifer Jackenthal and Marcia Hales (franchise cofounders); Scott Rasmussen (Layton store co-owner); Sherry Erickson (Sugarhouse store owner and Layton co-owner).
