Don't Put Your Pocketbook On Spin Cycle

(Sunday, October 16, 2005) - As the weather gets colder, people begin to pull out their coats, sweaters and
scarves. But these bulky items increase the wear and tear on washing machines, putting new washing machines on the
holiday wish list.
To avoid a washing machine break down, Doug Rogers, chief operating officer of Mr. Appliance®, strongly advises
against overloading.
"Simply drop your clothes into the washing machine. Don't push them down, trying to squeeze in as many clothes as
possible," Rogers says. "A normal load of dry laundry weighs 10 to 12 pounds, but that number doubles once the
clothes are wet. Plus, the cost of doing an extra load is far less than a repair bill."
Overloading a washing machine leads to transmission and motor failure, as well stretching and breaking of drive
belts. Usually there are no warning signs; it just stops working.
If that isn't enough incentive — a washing machine chocked-full of clothes doesn't clean as well as a normal load.
"If it's jam-packed, the machine doesn't have the capabilities to take the dirt away," Rogers said. "Your clothes will
smell clean because of the soap, but they're really not clean."
Mr. Appliance offers these additional tips to save money in your laundry room:
Replace washing machine hoses every three to five years to prevent flooding
o Use steel-braided hoses rather than rubber ones
o As an extra precaution, turn off the water supply when you go on vacation
Use warm and cold water instead of hot to lower your utility bills
o To save energy, reduce your water heater's temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit
Regularly clean the lint trap in your dryer
o Replace plastic and aluminum venting with solid, metal venting for better air flow and less lint
o Extensive lint build-up increases the chance of a fire
