Love Your Appliances This Valentine's Day
(Tuesday, February 07, 2006) -
Sometimes whispering sweet nothings is all it takes to maintain romance in a relationship, but keeping your appliances working properly takes a little more effort. Showing some love to your appliances this Valentine's Day will keep laundry loads tranquil and mealtimes sweet. "The periodic up-keep of an appliance can increase its life and even improve the way it operates," said Doug Rogers, chief operating officer for Mr. Appliance®. "Proper maintenance is less expensive than having to replace an appliance, and it can deter potential disasters, like a fire or a flooded house." Whether you're taking your date out for a Valentine's Day dinner or staying in and cooking something special, the following tips by Mr. Appliance are simple ways to pamper your appliances: Check washing machine hoses for cracks or holes o Immediately replace broken hoses o Replace hoses every three to five years to prevent flooding o Use steel-braided hoses rather than rubber ones Remove lint buildup from inside the dryer and the venting hose o Clean your dryer's lint screen and filter before or after each load of clothes o Keeping your dryer lint-free helps thwart dryer fires, and it dries clothes quicker Use only powdered detergent in the dishwasher o Gels clog the detergent dispenser and can cloud glassware Clear dirt off refrigerator's condenser coils o Unplug refrigerator and use a vacuum to remove dust from the coils o Keeping the coils free of dirt will help it run more efficiently and trim utility bills Clean oven and stovetop o Don't run the self-cleaning cycle within one week of a big dinner - ovens have a tendency to fail during or right after a self-cleaning cycle o Clean the reflector bowls under the burners to help cook more efficiently o Use non-abrasive cleaners, especially on glass-top ranges o Unclog gas burners by using a tooth pick to poke all the burner head holes clean. To make sure residue is burned off, turn the burner on a high flame for 10 to 15 minutes. (Be sure the gas burner is off prior to cleaning.) Deodorize garbage disposal o Place a handful of ice cubes in the disposal. Add lemon, orange or lime peels and run disposal with cold water for 15 to 30 seconds. Continue to rinse with cold water.
