Head Of Largest Patty Franchise In Us Back Home For Bakers Week

KINGSTON, JAMAICA. (Thursday, May 11, 2006) - LOWELL Hawthorne, head of the largest franchise of Caribbean baked food products in the United States, will be arriving in Jamaica for the celebration of Bakers' Week from May 14-21.

Hawthorne, a highly successful Jamaican-born entrepreneur, has steered Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill from a small New York bakery to becoming one of America's leading ready-to-eat Caribbean food franchises, with more than 100 stores nationwide.

Golden Krust made its name selling traditional Jamaican specialities such as patties, buns and turnovers, and now offers Reggaefest meals such as jerk chicken and fish, as well as online shopping.

The success of Golden Krust has been featured on Fox 5 News; New York View on WABC-TV-Channel 7; The Food Network and on CNN. The Caribbean food retailer has also been featured in Forbes Magazine, The New York Times, New York Daily News, NewsDay, and The Washington Post among others.

Most recently, Hawthorne was presented with the coveted Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer (OD) from the government of Jamaica.

Hawthorne says Golden Krust was first founded out of an identified need for community renewal.

"We started the business to help people in the community as well as to provide a stable working environment," he explained.

In 1995, Forbes Magazine featured Golden Krust as one of the fastest growing minority-owned businesses in the United States. And, in 2002, Hawthorne was named 'Entrepreneur of the Year' for the Tri-State Area by the accounting firm Ernst & Young.

Hawthorne is the scheduled keynote speaker at the Bakers Week banquet and awards ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday,

May 20 at the Sutton Place Hotel in Kingston. The event will be hosted by the Bakers Association of Jamaica.

He is also expected to participate in baking seminars, which are being organised by the association as part of
the celebrations.
