Want A Job? Trades Employers Are Seeking You!
SAN DIEGO, CA (Monday, April 11, 2005) -
According to U.S. News and World Report, the jobless recovery may be over. Although manufacturing continues to lose jobs overseas, other fields are seeing a rebound, with 40% of the new jobs being in trades. And California is among the top 10 states in the creation of new jobs. Contingent labor trade jobs are among the fastest growing segment of the U.S. economy right now. Employers in the west and southwest are scrambling to find a wide variety of qualified workers, including machinists and truck drivers. In most trade jobs, the average worker age is nearing 45, with baby boomers starting to retire. As these trained employees leave the workforce, it's creating a huge hole for employers because younger workers are not filling the gap. There seems to be a belief among younger workers that the only way to earn a "good living" is to go to college. However, statistics show that a college degree takes an average of 4.5 years to complete, and costs about $67, 500. The new college graduate can expect to earn an annual salary of $35,000 per year. Compare that to trades training. For some trades, it takes as little as 9 months (or as much as 2 years) to earn the necessary certifications. Trade school tuition is significantly cheaper, and new workers in a variety of positions can earn up to $15/hour, which works out to be $30,000 a year. So, in less time and for less money, trade school graduates earn a comparable salary. Contingent labor companies (staffing companies) make it even easier to work in the trades, by allowing trade school students to work part time, and full time workers to try different companies before accepting full time jobs. Positions offered by contingent labor companies vary from electricians to carpenters to machinists to drivers. And, they allow workers to be flexible in terms of hours, positions and pay rates. So, if you don't want to wait for a good job, it might be time to think outside the college box, and consider a career in a trade profession.
