Super Subs At Jersey Mike's

Jersey Mike's on Route 44 specializes in Italian, club and Philly cheese steak subs.

RAYNHAM (Thursday, March 30, 2006) - Everything is up to date at Jersey Mike's sub shop on Route 44.

"There's a whole new look about us," said manager Scott Clark, who took over the shop last September. "We've reorganized the operation, given it a whole new look, and upgraded the menu."

In truth, the shop does have a new sparkle to it - a clean, bright, spacious atmosphere that's enhanced by the pleasant aroma of fresh food and the friendly demeanor of Clark and his comanager, Kristin Pisano.

"The menu's the same," Clark said, "but we'll be getting a lot of new items over the next six months, including new wraps and a new kind of cheese steak."

Jersey Mike's actually opened at its present location three years ago. At that time, it was the first Massachusetts outlet for the 315-store, nationwide franchise. The original operator sold it back to the company last fall. To reopen the facility, the company turned to Clark, who had managed the original Jersey Mike's five years earlier at Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.

Clark-, who at that juncture was on the road, looking for new store locations in Alabama, accepted the challenge and took over the Taunton operation on Sept. 1.

Clark took a series of steps to rejuvenate the shop. He donated subs to local organizations, and attended catering expos like the one that's scheduled for March 2 In Taunton.

"We've built back the business one customer at a time," he said.

He has also introduced a new fund-raising program tied to patronage at the shop.

"We'll designate a day or evening when your team or organization merely has to show up at Jersey Mike's and eat 'the world's best sub sandwiches.' We'll donate 15 percent of the proceeds back to your group."

The program, he said, is available to PTA and booster groups, seniors, charity walks, sports clubs and teams, youth groups, and more.

He takes pride in the fact that customers can watch their orders being prepared from totally fresh ingredients, "from rolls to vegetables, from meats to cheeses."

Jersey Mike's specializes in Italian subs, club subs, and items like Philadelphia Cheese Steak sandwiches. The shop also offers daily specials.

The clientele varies.

"We have moms and families, lawyers and construction workers," Clark said.

Clark said business has been good for the winter months, and he expects to greet additional traffic as he increases his marketing efforts in the coming weeks. He added that the shop will soon open a companion eatery in nearby Milford, where the corporation is in the process of buying a new store - one that Clark will add to his own management portfolio.

Meanwhile, his Taunton customers will be enjoying the specials and the whimsical promotions like the daily cookie contest. Each day, Scott or Kristin writes a phrase on a blackboard - a fragment of a song or some phrase relating to a movie. Guess the tune or the film and you win a cookie!

More to the point is Scott Clark's daily operational strategy: "We keep the store clean and friendly," he said, "and serve a good product."
