Restaurant Review: Jersey Mike's Offers Fresh, Tasty Subs
(Thursday, April 13, 2006) -
Seasonal residents from Down the Shore have been waiting eagerly for Jersey Mike's to open. They know what a fresh sub is all about since the chain opened its first store in 1956. Fresh is the operative word. Everything is. The meat and cheese are sliced to order; the salads are dressed on the spot; the grill is heated up for the famous Philly or chicken parm. It's not elegant and it's not very fast but it is fresh and clean and that's what counts most in a sub shop. We stopped in one afternoon and our orders were taken instantly and efficiently. We had an Italian Sub ($5.45) "Mike's Way." That's with oregano and good olive oil and vinegar. It is piled high with freshly sliced provolone, ham and cappicola and shredded lettuce that hasn't been hanging around since the morning shift. The roll is soft and tasty. To mollify our cardiac food police we also ordered a turkey wrap ($5.49). It is almost totally fat free with lettuce, tomato and honey mustard rolled inside a tender tortilla. And it was delicious and very satisfying.
If you're looking for a heartier if not heart healthier mouthful, try the grilled pastrami Reuben or the Famous Roast Beef, roasted on the premises using USDA certified Angus beef.
You can ask for any sub to be made into a wrap or, for the carb-conscious, have a sub in a tub and avoid the bread altogether. The bread is good, though, and fresh and very tempting.
Jersey Mike's can also help you raise funds for almost any good cause. PTA members, youth groups and sports teams have raised money the easy way at Jersey Mike's. Call and set a day and time. Your group can come in and order anything on the menu and Mike's will donate 15 percent of the bill to the group's cause. As they say on their flier, "It's easier than spending all day Saturday washing cars." And the subs are really good. You might call them substantial.
