Howard Johnson Announces New Developments In Nova Scotia, New Brunswick And Newfoundland
Canadian Provinces ripe for significant hotel industry growth Moncton, St. Johns, and Halifax chosen as sites for three new construction hotels
SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA (Monday, November 15, 1999) -
After more than doubling the number of Howard Johnson franchises across the country from 21 hotels only one year ago, the chain will now focus its attention on building a stronger presence in Eastern Canada. Another 17 applications have been received by the master franchisee from hotel owners who want to join the Howard Johnson chain.
The St. Johns, Moncton and Halifax sites will solidify Howard Johnsons presence in the Atlantic Provinces. Each of the hotels will offer 100 to 125 guest rooms. Another agreement to build a Howard Johnson Hotel as part of the Heritage Hockey Museum and Sports Complex in Windsor, Nova Scotia is close to being signed.
Our Maritime hotels have cultivated great customer loyalty and weve been working to serve our customers even better by expanding the number of cities in which they can stay at a Howard Johnson hotel, says Glen Blake, vice-president of Howard Johnson Franchise Canada. We see the Maritime market as key to our growth.
The recent growth of the Howard Johnson brand in Canada has been tremendous, says Mary Mahoney, president and CEO, Howard Johnson International, Inc. In June, we announced the opening of the 30thHoward Johnson property in the country. Since then, eight Howard Johnson properties have opened with eight more to join the system bringing the total to 46. We continue to support Glen Blake, his team at Howard Johnson Franchise Canada and their strategic expansion of the brand in Canada, with a primary focus being the Atlantic Provinces.
Research from Canadian Lodging Outlook, a travel research group, shows that the occupancy rate for the hotel industry in the Atlantic provinces is around 68 per cent. The national average is 62 per cent. That means there is room for an increase in the number of available rooms in the region, something that Howard Johnson is positioning itself to capitalize on.
The fact that the companys newest developments are in the Atlantic Provinces shows that the region is taking a high profile in Howard Johnsons growth plans.
Howard Johnson International Inc. franchises more than 500 hotels and inns worldwide, including properties in Canada, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Israel, Lebanon, Malta, Colombia, Venezuela, the United Arab Emirates and soon in Argentina, Jordan and the United Kingdom.
