Golden Corral Ranked #1 In Family Steakhouse Segment For Sixth Straight Year

The annual "Franchise 500" list by the California-based business publication is the oldest rating of franchises and is widely regarded as the most complete. The magazine weighs numerous factors with the chief ones being financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of system.

There are 326 franchise restaurants (plus 120 company-owned units) in the Golden Corral system and franchisees will account for over two-thirds of systemwide sales of about $1 billion in 2000.

"Being ranked number one is an honor, but being on top for six straight years is very, very special," Larry I. Tate, Senior Vice President of Franchising, said. "It's a great tribute to our franchisees and the Golden Corral concept."

In addition to the Entrepreneur recognition, Nation's Restaurant News ranked Golden Corral #1 in the grill-buffet segment for the fifth consecutive year and Success magazine gave Golden Corral a perfect 5 Star rating for franchisee satisfaction, based on an independent survey of Golden Corral franchisees.

Steaks are Golden Corral's heritage. All steaks are fresh cut daily in the restaurant and never frozen. A recently-introduced thick cut steak has capitalized on the resurgence of interest in red meat.

The focal point of the restaurant is the "Golden Choice Buffet" that offers 140 hot and cold items, including fried and rotisserie chicken. It features a carving station with ham, roast chicken, roast beef and turkey.

Golden Corral franchisees choose from three sizes of restaurants (small, mid-size and large) scaled in investment costs to match the sales potential of the markets they serve. The restaurants range from about 7,400 square feet with 270 seats to about 11,500 square feet with 450 seats.
