Williams will offer his insight and unique perspective on leading the way based on Case's theme Setting the Pace Friday, October 14th, at 10:00 a.m. in the Baltimore Convention Center.
With eleven straight NCAA tournament berths, seven Sweet Sixteen appearances, a pair of consecutive Final Four showings, and the 2002 national championship, Williams is the winningest coach in the history of Maryland basketball. In 2001, he became the sixth coach since 1980 to direct his alma mater to the NCAA Final Four. And a year later, he became the first coach since 1974 to guide his alma mater to a national championship title. Since his arrival as head coach in 1989, the Terps basketball program has soared to a level of national prominence.
A 1968 graduate of Maryland, Williams lettered as the Terps' starting point guard from 1965-67 and served as the team captain during his senior season. It was during his senior year that Williams began to develop his basketball philosophy. After earning a degree in business, he began his professional coaching career as an assistant and then head coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, N.J, guiding his first team to a perfect 27-0 record and the state title.
In 1979, Williams became the head coach at American University in Washington, DC. His 1981, team set the school record for victories with a 24-6 mark, winning the East Coast Conference championship, and earning a berth to the NIT. In 1983, he became the head coach at Boston College, posting a 25-7 record and leading the Eagles to the Big East regular season championship and advancing to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament in his first season . In 1987, Williams served as the head coach at The Ohio State University. During his three year tenure, each of his teams advanced to postseason play.
