Give A Dog A Bone

MILWAUKEE (Wednesday, July 27, 2005) - The dog days of summer have brought a bright idea to the Breadsmith shop at 2632 N. Downer Ave. For the next few weeks, they'll make and sell dog bones for $1, with all proceeds going to the Wisconsin Humane Society.

The notion came from a little boy who can't get enough of dogs.

"It was actually my little boy's idea. Alex, he's 8," says Don Kaminski, owner of the Downer Ave. Breadsmith. "He loves dogs, absolutely loves dogs." Alex has two, an 11-year-old golden Labrador retriever named Randy and a 3-year-old chocolate Lab named Rocco.

"He always wants to give his money to the humane society, to animals," his father said. "I said, 'What if we made dog bones?' "

And so they are, turning out plain biscuits using the store's French bread dough.

"They're handmade, just like everything else here, so each one's a little unique," Kaminski says.

They've sold about 80 bones so far. The promotion runs through Aug. 11.
