Well, her dream is now a reality.
Tamica seems like your average college student working her way through school. However, she's anything but average.
The 25-year-old owns a Subway restaurant in San Juan.
"I started researching this back in high school," she said. "I had worked at a job where someone had opened up their own business and it started me thinking." Soon after high school at the age of 21, Tamica bought her own Subway franchise with the help of a small loan from her family.
"They didn't buy it for me," she said. "They took a chance. They believed in me and as far as now that we've completed two years of business things seem to be going in a good direction." Business is booming for Tamica.
But she happily admits that many people still have a hard time believing she's the owner.
"I hear she's the owner and so that's very impressive," said Esteban Palacios Jr., a customer. "A very young lady and this is a very busy Subway." "It's kind of funny sometimes because you get all types of different customers asking for certain reasons," Tamica said. "And then, when they ask to speak to the manager or the owner, and then I come out." As for her employees, Tamica said that they respect her and she respects them, even though some of them are older than her.
She said that she knows she's not your average restaurant owner, but hopes other young people will be inspired to do the same.
Tamica said that she's already planning for the future, looking at opening up some other businesses in the Valley.
