The trainer is in the corner, but there are no title fights and no one's bobbing and weaving. The red, white and blue ring ropes not only add a Rocky-like, sweaty workout feel, but they might also be set up to prevent exhausted men from falling flat on their faces.
Move beyond the ropes, though, and you enter The Blitz, a business specializing in a 20 minute cross-training exercise program that combines strength training, martial arts and cardiovascular exercise. In 20 minutes, men tackle 20 stations, twice each, working all the main muscle groups.
The Blitz, 356 S Mountain Ave , Upland , is a cozier alternative to the area's larger gyms because it utilizes a total of 10 machines and six heavy bags. Every 30 seconds, a ring bell alerts all participants to rotate clockwise to another station.
"This is not a boxing club – it's more of a fitness center," said Richard Recano, manager of the Upland branch. "A guy in tip-top shape will get a good workout."
The equipment employs cylinders that provide resistance on targeted muscle groups, so "Blitzer's" are working two body parts at once without having to adjust weights on the machines. Resistance is based on the speed in which the muscles are worked, which means everyone, regardless of body size, can train on them.
The same people trying to lose weight can also tone their muscles, increase endurance, lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, increase bone density, and improve cardiovascular efficiency, Saucedo said.
"I tell people that if they can do more after 20 minutes that they didn't push themselves to the max," Recano said. "You should feel like you really pushed yourself and like you just had a good workout."
David Cordova, 34, is one of 61 members at the Rancho Cucamonga gym, which opened in December at Vineyard Ave and Baseline Rd. Cordova said his wife told him about the men's gym because she regularly attends a women's fitness center located a few doors down.
"This is like my fifth time and I've already notices a difference," Cordova said. "My stamina's already built up and I feel like I got a 45 minute workout. I don't wake up with stiff muscles anymore."
The benefits are simply too great to be ignored. Get going on your path to fitness.
