National Float Day: A&w® Restaurants Gear Up To Give Away

(Monday, June 14, 2004) - To celebrate the brand's 85th anniversary and the first day of summer, participating A&W® restaurants will give away a free A&W Root Beer® Float with any purchase on "National Float Day," Monday, June 21, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.

A&W Restaurants, Inc., the longest running quick service franchise chain in the country, is inviting America to its 85th anniversary celebration, and the restaurants are providing the refreshments.

"Our brand is all about 'hometown American Favorites made fun,'" said Mike Tattersfield, President of A&W Restaurants, Inc. "The families who visit our restaurants love our famous Root Beer Floats, and we think this will be a great way to kick off the summer. June 21 is going to be a fun day for our restaurant teams and all the customers who will enjoy free floats."

A&W Root Beer® Floats will be available free of charge with any purchase between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at participating A&W® All American Food® locations. Even the smallest purchase qualifies; buy even an order of fries and you'll get a free Root Beer Float.

Tattersfield's team is dealing with some large numbers as they project how many floats will be given away on June 21. Initial estimates are for more than 900,000 free floats, and perhaps in excess of one million. The chain is estimating they will go through more than eight million ounces of A&W Root Beer® and more than three million ounces of vanilla soft serve and hard pack ice cream. (There is a one float per person limit.)

"National Float Day" is being supported by a national print drop, a first for the chain. The week prior to "National Float Day," A&W® customers will receive an oversized Root Beer Float flyer, which will also include coupons for five food offers.

Since 1919, A&W® All American Food® has been serving a signature frosty mug root beer float and All American pure-beef hamburgers and hot dogs. There are more than 730 A&W® All American Food® outlets in 15 countries and territories around the world, and more than 520 additional points of distribution at Yum! Brands multibrand restaurants.
