Fox's Pizza Named 2004 Small Business Of The Year
VALDOSTA (Monday, April 26, 2004) -
Fox's Pizza @ Funstreet was named the 2004 Small Business of the Year by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce Thursday at its annual "Salute to Small Business."
Owner Sheldon Presser accepted the award on behalf of the family dining and entertainment center.
"I'm speechless," said Presser, as he asked his wife, Connie, to join him on the podium. "This is so exciting. It's the closest I'll get to an Academy Award -- the feeling I had sitting out there in the audience."
Jodi Doss of Jodi's Accessories, the 2003 Small Business of the Year, presented the award to Presser, saying that the four-year-old business has overcome a number of obstacles to become successful. She cited Presser's commitment to the community and his work with area schools and organizations, as well as his innovative efforts to market his business as contributing factors in his success.
"We would say that Sheldon thinks outside the box, but Sheldon doesn't even know there is a box," said Doss.
The award is presented annually by the Chamber and chosen by a selection committee of previous winners and area small business owners. Other nominees for the award included Allan Dear Real Estate, Covington's Dining & Catering, Fellowship Home, Magnum Broadcasting, Sojourner Coffee House and Special Occasion Rentals.
Fox's Pizza @ Funstreet is a family entertainment center, with a restaurant area featuring pizza and sub sandwiches, and a large game area that both children and adults can enjoy.
The purpose of the "Salute to Small Business" week is to recognize the efforts and contributions these companies make to the area's economy. More than 80 percent of all business in Lowndes County is classified as small business.
The breakfast also featured guest speaker Melody Harrison of the National Federation of Independent Business. Introduced by state Sen. Tim Golden, Harrison is based in Atlanta and works with legislators on issues that affect NFIB's small business members.
