Dr. Joseph C. Maroon To Serve As Medical Consultant To Gnc Corporation

GNC Corporation today announced that Dr. Joseph C. Maroon, a world-renowned neurosurgeon, will serve as the company’s medical consultant.

PITTSBURGH, PA (Tuesday, December 13, 2005) -
Dr. Maroon, the Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience and a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center(UPMC), routinely suggests that his patients enhance their medical and surgical treatment with nutritional supplements.

“I have been personally shopping at GNC and sending my patients there for many years,” Dr. Maroon said. “I believe strongly in the benefits of nutritional supplements and GNC provides an extraordinary range of extremely innovative, high-quality products. I am pleased to be associated with GNC.”

Dr. Maroon, who has been listed as one of “America’s Best Neurosurgeons” for eight consecutive years by “America’s Best Doctors”, is a globally-recognized authority on concussion and orbital and brain tumors, as well as minimally- invasive surgery of the spine. He serves as the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers, a position he has held for 20 years. In that role, Dr. Maroon and a colleague developed ImPACT© (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), the first computerized system to help determine the severity of a concussion as well as a timetable for the athlete’s return to competition.

Dr. Maroon is also an accomplished athlete: a Scholastic All-American football player at Indiana University, he has competed in 50 triathlons, including the Hawaiian Ironman in 1996 and 2003 and three other Ironman competitions.

Dr. Maroon came to believe in the benefits of nutritional supplements through personal necessity. Following the premature death of his father from heart disease, Dr. Maroon pursued avenues through which he could avoid a similar fate. He came to rely on a regimen of a healthy diet, exercise and nutritional supplements to strengthen his own heart health.

“My father’s death was a life-changing event for me,” Dr. Maroon said. “Over the more than 25 years since then, I have been on a mission to find the highest quality products and lifestyle choices that contribute to a balanced life. I have passed along the lessons I’ve learned to hundreds of my patients, and I am thrilled to be able to extend my knowledge to GNC’s millions of customers worldwide.”

In his work with GNC, Dr. Maroon will educate consumers regarding the benefits of GNC’s Preventive Nutrition® products, including Fast Flex®, Heart Advance® and the Osteoarthritis Pain Management Plan. He will also speak out on other GNC products and issues of interest to the nutritional supplement industry.

“We are delighted that Dr. Maroon has chosen to join in our mission to help consumers live well,” said GNC President and Chief Executive Officer, Joe Fortunato. “He is one of the world’s foremost neurosurgeons, and he is a passionate advocate of nutritional supplements. Our customers will benefit greatly from Dr. Maroon’s association with GNC.”

GNC, based in Pittsburgh, PA, is the largest global specialty retailer of nutritional supplements, which includes vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements, sports nutrition products, diet and energy products and specialty supplements.
