Aba Honors Tapioca Express Founders With "Strength Of Teamwork" Award

ABA (Asian Business Association) held its 27th Annual Banquet and Award Ceremony last Friday at Marriott Downtown in Los Angeles. More than 500 political, business, and community leaders attended the event. The company it selected to receive the Theme Award, The Strength of Teamwork, was Tapioca Express, Inc., the first company to bring tapioca milk tea franchise to North America and currently has more than 50 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Founded in 1976, ABA recognizes outstanding enterprises and individuals each year. According to Dennis Huang, ABA Executive Director, "The selection committee was impressed with the fact that the three founders of Tapioca Express grew the business out of nothing with a single product from Asia to where it is today. " Tapioca drinks, sometimes called "boba" drinks or "bubble" drinks, refer to the jumbo-size black or white tapioca that sit at the bottom of a cup and then are covered by a tea, milk, coffee, or fruit juice concoction, sealed and sucked through a large straw. The drinks, with flavors ranging from the familiar coconut or strawberry to the more exotic mango or lychee, originated two decades ago in Asia and have been gaining popularity in the United States for the last few years.
When asked why Tapioca Express chose to introduce tea products across the Pacific, the founders replied that there had been numerous research reports that indicated the health benefits of tea. According to Laura Lin, Marketing Director at Tapioca Express, stores located in areas with demographics not primarily Asian, such as San Diego, Colorado, Chino Hills, have reported great progress in sales. "It is very encouraging to know that the products are welcomed by non-Asian communities as well and that they also recognize brand makes a difference in quality."
