Mr. Electric - Immigrating, Franchising And The American Dream
DOYLESTOWN , PENNSYLVANIA (Wednesday, July 28, 2004) -
Oleg Nikishin may speak with a Russian accent, but his story is as American as apple pie: Work hard. Follow your dreams. Own your own business. Achieve success.
Oleg was born and raised near Moscow , and he studied hard to earn a degree in engineering at a university in Ukraine . While in college, he met his wife, who is now a nurse, and the two started a family and began to build a future together. But it was Oleg's passion for the business world that ultimately led him and his family to America in 1990.
Once stateside, Oleg served as project manager at an electrical engineering job for an HVAC company. Then he managed area-wide LAN network support for the expansion of the Wegmans grocery store chain. By 1996, when computers hit big, Oleg had opened Nik's Computer Systems retail store. That was followed by a job with US Engines, where he traveled overseas to factory branches in Taiwan and elsewhere. Whether working for a huge firm or operating as an independent, Oleg's resume and expertise were always growing.
Finally, in 2003, Oleg found himself ready for the franchising world. It combined the satisfaction he had for owning his own business with the resources and stability he enjoyed from being part of a larger company. He researched several franchise opportunities and chose Mr. Electric, where he could put much of his engineering experience to immediate use. He attended the company's annual convention and the decision was obvious to join, he said.
"I wanted a franchise because of my past business experience," Oleg said. "But I didn't want to reinvent the wheel. I also wanted a service business that receives a lot of demand in any economy. I wanted a company with history, a long-term player that was trend proof - a company that shared my vision and ethics and would help me build for retirement. Mr. Electric was all that."
Today, Oleg's wife and two children are thrilled with his choice, because they moved to Doylestown , Penn. , where the franchise is located and closer to big city life.
"It's actually a lot like where I grew up outside of Moscow ," Oleg said. "There's more to do and see here than where we used to live 110 miles away."
As for business, Oleg said, " Bucks County is booming." His Mr. Electric franchise opened last October and is doing 90-95 percent residential service and repairs. Oleg has worked the franchise system, hired help, and steadily watched the business grow.
"Success doesn't happen overnight," he added. However, this man from Russia is an official American hit.
