Redpaths On Course For Kailua Athletic Store

KAILUA (Wednesday, April 27, 2005) - Susan and George Redpath hit Kailua running with Fleet Feet, their new athletic store set to open in late May or early June at the old Pizza Hut location

Besides stocking running, swimming, yoga clothing and accessories, the Redpaths will offer free monthly conferences with guest speakers on nutrition, running, alternative medicine and other topics.

“We’re a retail gear shop using a community-based health approach,” said Susan Redpath. “We are going to incorporate education with free activities

”Fleet Feet is a national franchise, and the Redpaths are thrilled to be one of only 10 applicants approved per year out of 2,500 inquiries. A newsletter and in-store calendar will help spread the word about its programs which range from fun runs to a monthly, early morning “sunrise scramble.” Fleet Feet is currently forming liaisons with organized running groups, including the Brian Clarke School of Fitness.

One of the major events the shop sponsors is the Oct. 23 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Susan Redpath served as president of that race two years ago. (Race registration will be held at Fleet Feet in September.)

“We’ll have clothing you could wear to go for a walk in the morning, and then go out with friends later on,” Susan said. “Whether someone wants to do a 2-mile ocean swim or 3 minutes in the Kailua community pool, we’ll have something for them.”

The Redpaths moved from San Francisco to Kailua in 2000 to accommodate their outdoors lifestyle. George owned a cycling tour company for 15 years and led tours for bicyclists through the wine country, Canada, Europe, and the Mainland. Susan, who’s been a recreational runner and sprinter for 30 years, was previously a senior vice president of operations for high tech companies.

The Redpaths still are seeking good candidates for two part-time positions and plan a grand opening event for the store this summer.

Fleet Feet is located at 17 Aulike St. behind McDonald’s. The shop will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call 262-3278.
