Vacaville Couple On The Run Around The World
VACAVILLE (Monday, December 05, 2005) -
Marathoners Todd and Carol Rewick take a trip to Amsterdam for their first overseas competition.
Fortunately for Todd and Carol Rewick they didn't have to stop and ask directions.
"There's nothing like doing a marathon where you don't understand anybody," said Carol Rewick after the two recently returned from a marathon in Amsterdam.
"They use a lot of consonants," said Todd Rewick, one of the owners of Fleet Feet Sports in Vacaville, and Carol's husband.
The Rewicks won one of 15 trips to Amsterdam handed out by Mizuno based on their store display involving the Mizuno line.
The couple managed to find their way around the tulip-lined course for the marathon, sponsored by Mizuno, which attracted some of the top long distance runners in the world.
"The course was beautiful. The marathon went in the country, along a dike and through the town," Carol said.
The course was also very different from what the Rewicks are used to in Northern California. Running on their home terrain, the Rewicks might expect to finish at or near the front of the pack in a local race. In this unfamiliar land, the Rewicks were perhaps a little distracted.
"We went there to have fun. This was our first international marathon," Carol said. "The course finished in the Olympic Stadium. It was just amazing. "As runners often do, there are 'goal runs' and 'fun runs.' There was no pressure. We just wanted to enjoy it. We were both happy when the race was done and we could let our guard down. After that, we could eat, drink and do what we wanted."
They trained for the race much as they would for any competition, although the couple still had time to enjoy their all-expenses paid trip before and after the race.
"It was a tough race. We didn't do our best races by any means," said Carol, who finished the course in 3 minutes, 41 seconds. Todd finished the 42-kilometer race in 3:51.
"We didn't know what to expect. We were training for a full marathon, so we were comfortable with the distance," Todd said.
Amsterdam is a popular tourist destination, and the Rewicks discovered why it is so popular as they enjoyed cruises along canals, tours of cheese factories and windmills and great shopping and cafes.
Todd jokes about some of the sights of Amsterdam, but for him and his family, the experience was an early holiday gift.
"It was the last chance for my family to be together before the holidays, so it was a lot of fun. It was special," Todd said.
Both Todd and Carol are preparing now for races in the U.S. Carol is training for a marathon in Houston on Jan. 15. Todd's next scheduled run is the Napa Marathon in March.
