Finding The Right Running Shoes Crucial To Workout

PHILADELPHIA,PA,USA (Tuesday, December 20, 2005) - Whether you are a marathon runner or are just up for a jog, your running shoes can make or break your workout and the right fit is crucial.

Experts say that the general rule of thumb is to find something comfortable.

"If the shoe's not feeling good in the store, it's not going to get better as you break it in," said Dr. Eric Silverstein, a podiatrist.

Here's what to look for if you are buying new running shoes.

"When you take the shoe out of the box, you (don’t) want to (be able to) bend them in the middle,” said Alice Gold, of Fleet Feet.

If the shoe bends in the middle, that probably means it won't provide enough support and that could lead to an injury.

It is also a good idea to try a lot of shoes on and buy a bigger size.

“They need to buy at least a half-size and often a whole-size bigger because their foot swells when they are doing exercise, especially running," Gold said.

If you need a running shoe, avoid cross trainers. They are not made to handle the wear and tear of distance running.

"Running shoes are really geared for the type of impact which translates to about two or three times your weight that you land on when you're running," Gold said.

If you have a flat foot, you will need a shoe with more of an arch. Also make sure it has good shock absorption and that you change your shoes every few months to make sure you keep that shock absorption.
