D’angelo Sandwich Shops Relaunches Popular Steak Bomb And Double Peppercorn Sandwiches

DEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS (Tuesday, September 16, 2003) - D’Angelo Sandwich Shops announced today that, in response to popular demand, it has returned two items to its menu and will begin a limited-market test of two other sandwiches as a precursor to a system-wide rollout.

The two returning sandwiches are D’Angelo’s “Steak Bomb” and “Double Peppercorn Steak.” The Steak Bomb is a sandwich loaded with the works, adding Capicola ham, Genoa salami and melted provolone cheese to D’Angelo’s classic Number 9? (grilled steak, sautéed sweet peppers, onions and mushrooms). The Double Peppercorn sandwich enhances D’Angelo’s famous steak, adding both cracked peppercorn and a peppercorn dressing as well as sliced mushrooms, melted American cheese and lettuce.

Both items were part of a six-month “limited-time offer” that concluded this past February. But, as Senior Vice President of Product and Brand Development Lew Shaye explains, it became increasingly obvious over ensuing months that customers wanted more.

“People continue to ask for these sandwiches,” he says. “Plus, many of our franchisees, who have the liberty to offer two items as optional sandwiches on their menus, chose to keep these two selections after the offer ended in February. It was clear that we had come up with two winners, and we’re pleased to be bringing back both the Steak Bomb and the Double Peppercorn sandwiches.”

D’Angelo will once again feature both sandwiches as limited-time offers, however Shaye says if sales remain strong this time, there is a chance their run will extend indefinitely.

Tips To Keep The Menu Fresh

Earlier this month, D’Angelo also embarked on a test of two new sandwiches: the Turkey Tip sandwich, featuring mesquite tips, lettuce, tomato and chipotle ranch sauce; and the Steak Tip sandwich, featuring marinated sirloin, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato and steak sauce. The sandwiches will be offered initially for 12 weeks in D’Angelo’s Manchester, N.H. restaurants and, if well received, will roll out system-wide.

New Englanders have been demanding “tips” sandwiches, Shaye says, adding, “We feel confident that these two sandwiches will do well in our stores. Not only do they both add distinctive flavor offerings to our menu, but also both of these items are premium products, with sirloin and premium cuts of turkey tenderloin. Our customers have already demonstrated they will pay for a premium product, as evidenced by the success of our seasonally offered lobster sandwiches.”

All of these items, Shaye continues, capitalize on D’Angelo’s grill, a feature that sets the chain apart from other national and regional sub sandwich chains. All poultry and steak ingredients in D’Angelo’s sandwiches and salads are cooked to order, lending a superior quality to their taste that has promoted a growing corps of loyal customers.

D’Angelo is promoting the new sandwiches with phone scripts and in-store merchandising including table tents, point-of-sales displays, window posters, mall stands, menuboard panels and bag stuffers. Radio and newspaper advertisements began running this week. The newspaper ads offer $3 off any medium or large Turkey or Steak Tips sandwich. Outside of Manchester, stores are running Steak Bomb and Double Peppercorn free-standing inserts and radio spots.
