If You’re Getting Porn In Your Inbox, Ever Thought Your Kids Do Too?

TORONTO, ONTARIO (Thursday, June 09, 2005) - When Sam, 12, sits down at his computer, he’s likely to being doing it in the privacy of his bedroom or the basement. His mother Josephine, busy with her own business and teaching part-time, admits that she doesn’t keep a close watch on what he’s doing. “I check on him every now and then, and see that he’s got multiple MSN screens up, but I really don’t know what sites he’s visiting, who he’s talking to and what he’s saying. I also worry a lot about what he gets in his email”.

It’s a common problem. And one that Darryl Reiter, President of the Children’s Technology Workshop, a global leader in technology programming for children, thinks parents should be concerned about. “Most parents have no idea what their kids are doing when they’re online”, Reiter says.

At least one study, Young Canadians In A Wired World conducted by the Media Awareness Network, from 2001-2003, agrees with him. The study showed that 70% of Canadian parents think they know “a great deal” or a “fair bit” about the websites their kids are visiting. Only 45% of the kids agreed that their parents know what they’re doing online.

Reiter is holding 4 free evening workshops to give parents the information and tools they need to teach their kids safe, fun use of the internet. The one hour workshops, called “Minding the Net” will run on June 13 and 23 at 109 Vanderhoof Avenue, Suite 101a in Leaside, Toronto from 7-8pm. Another two workshops will be held at 1971 Queen Street East in The Beach, Toronto, and will run on June 14 and 21 from 7-8pm. Parents should call 416-425-2289 to register as seating is limited.
